The Scale Tape has been conceived as a practical way to make Earth history, astronomy and human timescales intelligible for students. It is manufactured from a traditional surveyor’s tape, intended for repeated use, and supplied with separate labels to highlight key points.
My Story
- Visualising Deep Time: The tape spans 100 metres, with each metre representing 10 million years of Earth's history. It goes all the way back to the Cambrian period.
- Public Exhibitions: He has publicly displayed the colossal tape in local spaces like the Howdale in Downham Market, unrolling it across the grass so students and community members can literally walk through millions of years of history.
- Origin of the Idea: Osborn came up with the concept while teaching. He used to draw out Earth's timeline on school fences to help his pupils conceptualize how recent human existence is compared to the age of the planet.
- Custom Production: To bring the invention to life, he approached a company to produce customized surveyor's tapes.
